Wampler
Wrangles Pair of Top 10s During Winter
Nationals at Lawton Speedway
Inside Line
Promotions - LAWTON, Okla. (Oct. 6,
2014) - Cody Wampler recorded a pair of
top 10s last weekend during the Winter
Nationals at Lawton Speedway.
"We ended up
ok," he said. "I always expect a little
more out of myself, but the reality is
for the last eight years that I haven't
been racing most of these guys have been
getting a lot of laps in. We'll continue
to get better."
Wampler, who
entered last weekend only a dozen races
into his return to sprint car racing,
kicked off the Winter Nationals last
Friday by winning his heat race from the
pole position. He then lined up on the
outside of the second row for the main
event, which locked the top-four
finishers into Saturday's feature.
"There was a
big cushion on the top," he said. "It
was rough, but slick underneath it. We
were a tick too tight and I just dropped
the ball on driving. I didn't drive it
hard enough. I didn't drive it deep
enough to carry momentum into the
cushion. It's a fine line of finessing
it, but you have to drive it hard, too.
That's where I need more laps."
Wampler fell
outside the top 10 before he made a
couple of late-race passes to finish
ninth.
"We fell back
to about 12th and I guess I
finally got mad enough," he said. "We
had a caution with about five laps to go
and I regained my mind and we got back
to ninth."
Things started
a little slow on Saturday as Wampler
finished fifth in a heat race, which
relegated him to the B Main. However, he
led every lap of the consolation race to
earn a transfer into the back of the
main event, which he started 17th.
"We were pretty
good," he said. "I really couldn't have
asked for anything better on the car. We
just needed to start up closer to the
front."
Wampler spent
most of the race on the bottom groove
picking cars off one by one.
"There was kind
of a cushion, but there was some good
stuff left on the bottom," he said. "We
rode around the bottom and I was able to
pick them off one at a time. We were
free enough on the bottom to get around
pretty good. We were pretty pleased with
the finish. I just wish we had a chance
to start up there closer to the front."
Wampler ended
with a seventh-place result, which
marked his ninth top 10 of the season.
"I also want to
extend my thoughts and prayers to the
family of the gentleman who passed away
on Saturday," he said. "It was a very
sad tragedy and I will continue to pray
for all who have been affected."
Wampler is
scheduled to race this Friday and
Saturday at Red River Speedway in
Wichita Falls, Texas, for the Red River
Open Wheel Nationals.
