Wampler
Nearly Records First Win of Season at
Lawton Speedway
Inside Line
Promotions - LAWTON, Okla. (May 5, 2015)
- Cody Wampler was oh so close to his
first victory of the season last
Saturday at Lawton Speedway.
Wampler led all
but the final three laps of the main
event at the bullring before mechanical
woes ended his bid for the win.
"Except for the
last three laps the night went really
well," he joked. "We had probably a
straightway lead and we were rolling
pretty good. It was definitely progress
compared to our previous races this
season."
Wampler kicked
off the night by winning his eight-lap
heat race from the pole.
"Everything
went as planned," he said. "It was great
to finish the race and finish well. The
track had slicked off quite a bit more
than we thought. It was definitely a
confidence booster and started to
confirm we're on the right track. It was
good momentum going into the feature."
Wampler lined
up on the pole for the 20-lap main
event.
"We started
pretty good," he said. "We were
definitely a little tight. The racing
groove was up on the top. We got a
caution at Lap 6 and after the caution I
changed my line and started getting in a
little lower. I began to set a good
pace. According to my wife's lap times
we made our fastest lap on Lap 16. We
were getting better as the race went on.
It was pretty encouraging from that
standpoint."
Wampler built a
substantial advantage heading into the
closing laps before the mechanical
problem appeared entering turn three on
Lap 18.
"About Lap 17
it started losing a little power and
then that next lap it just let go," he
said. "As far as the race went I felt
really comfortable in the car. It was
really good."
Wampler was
credited with a ninth-place result,
which marked his first top 10 of the
season.
He will take
the next couple of weekends off before
returning to action in late May.
